In the same announcement, ASUS also addressed issues concerning the built-in GPS and the locked bootloader on the ASUS Eee Pad Transformer Prime.

Regarding the built-in GPS, ASUS has admitted that this product is not meant to be a replacement for a professional GPS device. It pointed out that the GPS signal performance on this tablet can easily be influenced by many factors. Instead of telling you that you’re holding (or using) it wrong, ASUS apologizes for any inconveniences it may have caused. Moreover, even though the tablet has a built-in GPS chip, the company also went a step further by removing the GPS feature from the Transformer Prime specification sheet to avoid misleading people who are looking for “powerful” GPS device. Also, it has promptly released a firmware update for the Transformer Prime aimed at improving the GPS performance and fixing other minor issues.

However, it is also worth mentioning that some of those who have already received the Transformer Prime tablet, including those who have reviewed it much earlier, reported that they had never experienced any GPS or Wi-Fi issues with the tablet at all.

As for the bootloader, ASUS explains that it has decided to lock the bootloader to comply with the requirement from content providers for DRM (digital rights management) client devices to be “as secured as possible.” Apparently, ASUS provides a movie rental system on the Transformer Prime using Google DRM. The locked bootloader also helps prevent inexperienced user from tampering the system and running unofficial software that could potentially result in increased security risks and improper functioning of the tablet.

Fortunately, ASUS is aware that there are advanced users who would like the privileges of having an unlocked bootloader. To show its support for the modding community, ASUS is readily developing an unlock tool. At this point, the release date of the unlock tool for the Transformer Prime is still unknown. However, ASUS has made it clear that if you ever decide to unlock the bootloader of your device, the ASUS warranty will be void and Google video rental service that depends on DRM will also become unavailable for the unlocked device.

The ASUS Eee Pad Transformer Prime TF201 tablet, powered by Android 3.2 (Honeycomb), was released in December 2011. Hasbro, one of the largest toy company in the United States of America, is suing the Taiwan-based computer maker ASUS. It claims that ASUS latest Android tablet, the Eee Pad Transformer Prime, alledgedly violates Hasbro’s trademarks on the popular Transformers entertainment franchise.

ASUS has just started shipping the Eee Pad Transformer Prime tablet in North America, earlier this week. It is the first Android tablet to feature the quad-core NVIDIA Tegra 3 processor. It features an optional mobile docking keyboard accessory that effectively “transforms” the tablet into a notebook. No, it can’t transform into a robot. Apart from the “Transformer Prime” in its product name, the tablet bears no resemblance or any connection to the Transformers toys and movies by Hasbro.

Hasbro owns the Transformers trademarks. It has been involved in making toys, comic books, video games, animations, and developing live-action films based on the Transformers toys. It also owns the “Transformers Prime” trademark name that essentially covers “toy action figures; toy vehicles; toy robots covertible into other visual toy forms; board games; parlor games and entertainment services, namely, an on-going animated television series in the field of children’s entertainment.”

Hasbro is only invoking its rights and obligation to protect its trademarks. It is therefore seeking damages and a temporary injunction to prevent ASUS from selling the Eee Pad Transformer Prime tablet.

If you plan to buy an ASUS Eee Pad Transformer Prime Android tablet, looks like you have to act fast before the temporary sales injunction sets in.

Hopefully, ASUS and Hasbro can settle these legal issues quickly and without adding any further delay to the shipments of the ASUS Eee Pad Transformer Prime tablets. But, it is probably “More than Meets the Eye.”

This phone doesn’t have a Super AMOLED+ display. However, it comes with a 4.65-inch Super AMOLED display with 1280 x 720 pixels resolution. You get 720p HD resolution, which of the most smartphones that are available now, don’t have yet.

It doesn’t have Corning® Gorilla® glass, either. But, the fortified glass used by the Galaxy Nexus is incredibly dependable. You can take a key and try to scratch it, but it will be hard to leave a scratch mark on the screen. Though, I highly doubt that you would want to try that on your phone. The fortified glass is also chemically treated with oleophobic coating to repel skin oils and keep the screen fingerprint-free.

There is no microSD card slot, too. There’s no way of expanding the internal storage memory on the Galaxy Nexus. But, it does come with 32 GB internal storage memory. I’ve used Apple iPhone, iPad, and ASUS Eee Pad Transformer tablet with 32GB of internal memory. In my humble experience, I found that the 32GB internal memory was more than enough for a typical user like myself. However, in case you’re a power user and find yourself needing more storage space, you will have to consider swapping out the least-frequently used files out of the phone and into your computer, or utilize cloud services for your large collection of photos, songs, and videos.

As you can see, this phone doesn’t have all the latest and best hardware that you may have wanted. But, it still possesses all the essential parts that can make a perfectly good smartphone. And, whatever shortcomings it may have in hardware, it more than makes up for them in software. This is Google’s latest flagship Nexus phone after all!

Galaxy Nexus is produced by Google, in cooperation with Samsung, to introduce the all-new Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich operating system. Thus, it comes packed with excitingly new and improved features. Quite surprisingly, it performs exceedingly fast even on a 1.2Ghz dual-core processor. Applications launch almost instantly, while the visual animations and screen transitions are buttery-smooth without a hint of lag. And, since this is a Nexus phone, you can expect regular software updates coming from Google to fix bugs and improve the user experience.

However, like most LTE and 4G smartphones, the Galaxy Nexus also suffers from poor battery life. Depending on your usage, you can typically expect to get around 8 to 12 hours of battery life — or more if you turn off LTE. If you’re a heavy 4G user, then it’s best to consider getting an extended battery or an extra battery.

Overall, despite all the perceived hardware setbacks, the Galaxy Nexus humble offerings do outweigh the negatives, and it is undeniably among the best Android smartphones that you can own today.
