According to Jailbreakscene, the latest official Sony PS3 firmware version 3.56 sneaks in a rootkit which would eventually allow Sony to remotely perform anything they want with your console whenever your PS3 connects to the Playstation Network (PSN).

This is said to be similar to the method used by Microsoft to detect and ban XBOX 360.
People are speculating that this alleged rootkit backdoor was intentionally planted on the latest firmware by Sony immediately after the recent PS3 “jailbreak” by Geohot.
